: About the Federal Exams

Bar Exam Format

The United States District Court, Northern & Southern Districts of Florida require that you take and successfully pass an examination for each District in order to gain admission into its bar. The Northern & Southern District bar examinations are composed of 50 multiple choice and true/false questions on five tested subjects.

Tested Subjects

  1. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure
  2. Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure
  3. Federal Rules of Evidence
  4. Federal Jurisdiction & Venue
  5. Local Rules, Northern and/or Southern Districts

Required Score

A score of 75% is required to pass in the Northern District and 80% in the Southern District.

Grading and Results

Exams in the Northern District are graded, scores are communicated, and applicants that pass are sworn in immediately after the exam. The Southern District exams are graded later and test scores are mailed within 30 days of the test date.

Reciprocity

Exams are offered several times a year in each district and the two districts have testing reciprocity so an applicant can take an exam for both districts at the same time.
